I have to say this av does rub off on you after a while and kind of reminds me of that first Viagra commercial guy that was always so happy, I think his name was "Bob" but you know who I mean.

The U18 goalie camp is obviously a Hockey goalie camp for guys under 18 years old that are coming up through the ranks of Midget to Junior, and this year there are 16 guys invited from all around including one from the WHL Tri-City Americans.

Its a program of excellence camp.

 

Mine is boring. Just math.

A fractal. It is a color rendering of the boundary of the Mandelbrot Set, approximated recursively on a complex number plane, somewhere around iteration 750,000 or thereabouts.

The set is only approximated, and the approximation improves with the number of iterations. Black represents points that are definitely members of the set. The remaining colors are uncertain, but generally speaking, the brighter the color, the more likely that its point is a member of the set. Neat, huh?

Benoit Mandelbrot discovered the Mandelbrot Set by accident, long before there were color printers, or even color monitors. He knew he was dealing with a complex fractal, but he had no idea what it looked like. He used a mainframe computer to run a few iterations, and he printed the results on an ASCII greenbar impact printer (which could not print individual pixels, but only letter-sized graphics). The printout looked like a fuzzy squashed egg. So he ran more iterations for a few hours (the mainframe was much slower than today's $800 laptops), printed it again, and saw a squashed egg within the squashed egg. From there, he got funding for serious computing power, and, well, there it is. A fancy avatar, just for me!

The Mandelbrot set is fascinating to mathematicians for many reasons, such as (but not limited to): it is unknown whether the border is continuous; it has infinite length at every point on its length (in other words its border is a second-order infinity); the cardioid repeats infinitely at every scale.

Apart from those considerations, it is just plain pretty. Nature's tie-dye.
